Day 1

Day 1 of Destination SPACE camp was a success! Students got to settle into their Dorm rooms for the week as well as getting to mingle and get to know each other. Teams were assigned and given a brief overview of the projects they will be completing this week. We are excited to see what day 2 brings!

Day 2

Today students learned about what goes into designing a mission patch for a space mission with Mike Tanner. Students also received an introduction to space weather and data analytics, learned and observed sun spots and solar flares, and built, programmed, and tested their own Arduino based robotic rovers. Good job everybody!

Day 3

Today each student built and tested their weather stations and began to build their model rockets for tomorrow. After lunch students received a lecture from Dr. Eli Buckner, a professor in engineering at UNCA. Later in the evening Katherine Johnson IV&V Facility Director Gregory Blaney talked to students about NASA’s IV&V facilities in Fairmont, West Virginia and about the Mars Perseverance rover and also students went to Lookout Observatory to look at the Moon, Venus, and a star cluster using telescopes.

Day 6

Today was the last day of camp. Students presented their reports and videos in front of their parents and community members recapping what they did and learned during the week. Professor Bob Twiggs joined us again via Zoom to talk about high powered rocketry in Black Rock, New Mexico using CanSats. Ways of keeping in touch with Destination SPACE and our other programs were also discussed. Great job students and good luck in your future endeavors!
