Destination SPACE Satellite Week Space Camp 2020: West Virginia, Ohio, and Connecticut
GST, Destination SPACE, Inc., and the NASA IV&V ERC seek to inspire and empower students to become the next generation of STEM leaders.
In coordination with the NASA IV&V Education Resource Center (ERC), Global Science & Technology, Inc. (GST) and Destination SPACE, Inc., offered a hands-on STEM Satellite Week Space Camp to high school students from West Virginia, Ohio, and Connecticut, July 20-24, 2020.
This camp was the first time that former Destination SPACE students led a significant portion of the curriculum and hands-on exercises! Brothers Tyler and Austin Gleydura designed and 3D printed their own unique robotic Rover and Weather Stations kits for our students, and Lauren Ballard led data analytics and applications. Camp participants made programmable robots, weather stations, and stomp rockets. It was a full week of fun!
Tyler explains how to build a robot
Former student and Destination SPACE Intern, Tyler Gleydura, designed, and 3D printed, Arduino robotic Rover kits for our students. Tyler leads the assembly, programing, and testing of the Rover kits. No soldering or special equipment is needed to build them.
Austin leads weather station construction
Destination SPACE former student and our new Technology Specialist, Austin Gleydura, designed Weather Station kits that students built and programmed using a small breadboard and an Arduino min-controller. Students collected weather data in their own homes and backyards!
Lauren teaches weather data analysis
After collecting weather data, students learned how to make sense of their datasets. Destination SPACE former student and now our Data Analytics Specialist, Lauren Ballard, led students through a data analysis activity.
Professor Bob Twiggs
We were introduced to exciting student rocket launches in Utah.
Mr. Greg Blaney, Director of NASA’s IV&V Facility
We learned about NASA’s Mars Rover, Perseverance.
Dr. Todd Ensign, Program Director, NASA’s ERC
Students constructed their own stomp rockets!
